Students enrolled in a nurse assistant program must learn and pass off all skills associated with the program prior to attending clinicals. A clinical rotation allows a student to ‘shadow’ a working CNA in a long term care facility for the purposes of ‘practicing’ what you have learned on a real patient. This is part of your training – Students must complete and document attendance and skills performed for a minimum of 24 hours of the program. Skills Pass Off sheets must be completed prior to clinicals.
- Clinical hours are scheduled. If you cannot make a scheduled clinical shift it is your responsibility to contact the school in advance. There is a $50 rescheduling fee for each rescheduled clinical rotation unless there is a good, valid and documented reason for missing.
- Attendance is mandatory for the entire 24 hours.
- Bring a lunch and/or money for the vending machines. Breaks and lunch are arranged by the clinical instructor. You may not leave the facility for lunch.
- Professional behavior is a part of your clinical grade. Confidentiality, respecting patient rights, having a positive attitude, being self-motivated, communicating effectively, following proper techniques and protocol, and dependability are expected. You are required to follow all instructions of the clinical supervisor.
- Do not lift, move, transfer, or perform a procedure without direct ASSSITANCE from a facility nurse or CNA. You assume complete responsibility for your own safety. If you ARE injured on the scene you are responsible for your own medical transport and medical care. The school is NOT responsible.
- Be aware that you may see interactions and skills completed that appear wrong. Report any incidents or problems only to your clinical instructor, If you see an employee doing something incorrectly do not point it out to the employee, but discuss it with your clinical instructor. If there is a serious issue (abuse) report it immediately and ONLY to your clinical supervisor.
- Stay with your assigned CNA or where the clinical instructor assigned you. You may not leave the facility without permission. If you lose track of the CNA you are assigned to shadow, let the clinical supervisor know immediately.
- Before leaving it is your responsibility to have the clinical instructor sign off your hours and performance.
